the nineties 02:58
will you save enough memories that won’t fade away you’re just fourteen years old with nothing to show off but since you’re the admirer of this shotgun in his mouth why don’t you pull the trigger yourself before you start losing way, way too much before you start losing way, way too much will you spend enough time on his monument you’re just a dying boy with a few songs to hold onto before you start losing way, way too much before you start losing way, way too much before you start losing way, way too much before you start losing way, way too much

it will pass 03:54
i can’t stop thinking about you but it will pass, yeah, it will pass i can’t stop thinking about you but it will pass, yeah, it will pass i feel you’re so close to me even if you’re not alone miles away from my body lost and found in your library wish we could have stayed the same with these words we kept for us what we formed was the very best of old books when they came to rest see what you have done to me with all the pages that you stained come and read me come and read me see what you have done to me with all the beauty that you spread come and get me come and get me i can’t stop thinking about you but it will pass, yeah, it will pass i can’t stop writing about you but it will pass, yeah, it will pass

rusty 06:50
my heart is nothing more than a rusty box filled with photographs that ache at every mistake nothing more than that my faith is a trap nothing else makes me this frail will i ever see you fail nothing else will stay but a rusty box no one else survives the shades in your eyes i believe there’s no solace for those born without your grace my face is nothing more than a barren land cursed by your ghost who can’t leave when i’m still deceived no one else to blame your love was a fake nothing more than that, baby will i ever see your shame where did you take it away yeah, where did you take it away oh, where did you take it away where did you take it away why did you take it away this air i was meant to breathe oh, why did you take it away this dream i was meant to live no, there’s nothing, nothing i want wanna keep from you there’s nothing but a rusty, rusty box no, there’s nothing, nothing i want wanna keep from you there’s nothing, nothing but a rusty box

oh, rosalyn i suppose that you will break me too yet, i believe in everything you say anytime you come around with your voice sweet tender voice so how to show my love every day if you only think that everything i do is just what you deserve and how to serve you well if i can’t see that you do not take me for granted in your life all the time you’re so used to being adored even if you doubt more than once but i’m not blinded by your beauty i still think you should do something for my own good you’re so used to best offers but i never got the same luck if you choose me, now you must assume i still think you should do something for my own good oh, rosalyn i suppose that you will break me too yet, i believe in everything you say anytime you come around with your voice sweet tender voice so how to show my love every day if you only think that everything i do is just what you deserve and how to serve you well if i can’t see that you do not take me for granted in your life all the time you’re so used to being excused even if you act cowardly but i’m not blinded by your beauty i still think you should do something for both of us you’re so used to being the last to choose that you barely see what i want if you love me, you must assume oh, rosalyn i suppose that you will leave me too yet, i believe in every move we make anytime we lose control and rejoice for what is now but how to show our love every day if we only think that everything we do is what we both deserve and how to serve you well if i can’t see that you do not take me for granted in your life all the time yet, i believe in every move we make yet, i believe in everything you say yet, i believe in…

would you say my name if i couldn’t bring this love back to us with a single touch or a simple word would you feel the same, my dear if i couldn’t call these hands that would cure what once was so pure when you’re not so sure i just wanna leave when you leave me with all your silences the weight of your grief yeah, i still believe it hurts anyway but what you would say is no burden to me this would help to know where you wanna go when your eyes, they show many things like how i’m not wanted here anymore now i just wanna live when you calm me with all your promises the sound of your dreams yet, i still believe it hurts anyway but what you would say is no burden to me this would help to know where you wanna go when your eyes, they show many things like how i’m not wanted here anymore now
7.
you said i was teasing you but you have made me wait so long before i got a sign or two before we knew where we belong you say you might go back to where you can’t be hurt lost in the city lights feeling so pure among the dirt you guess it wouldn’t be too bad to cut the dark right now cause i’m here to let you see, always here just why this night is meant to be you say you won’t come back if there’s no hope to get some work but i could pay for both of us if you’re ok to stay with me you said i was teasing you but you have made me write a song before i got a kiss or two before you made my love so strong

about

Infused with a heady feeling of isolation, the first Rosalyn album confirms the musical direction taken by Frédéric Aellen at the beginning of the 2000’s, when computer science finally allowed the emergence of a wide array of one-man bands. However, his recent forays into the rabid indie rock world couldn’t foreshadow that he later would go back to the acoustic self-sufficiency so characteristic of his early works. Indeed, the singer/guitar player defines his new project more like a return to his roots than a radical 180-degree turn. Considered as a logic continuation and/or a natural evolution of the interlude named The View Electrical aka the collective of whom he remains the original founder, the EP released in November 2018 (« Single Mother ») was the direct follow-up to his early loves. Thus, it is not surprising that « All Your Silences » features his most haunting guitar loops, highlighted by a vaporous keyboard, a skeletal beatbox and even ethereal and melancholic strings like the smiles of the long-since departed who finally accepted to be immortalized by an old photobooth.

Surrounded by his faithful pals (no need to introduce Raul Bortolotti and the exquisite ladies of the trio Betty’s Kitchen), Frédéric Aellen also hired two brand new associates: a Lausanne Music School graduate, the multi-instrumentalist Adriel Rüfenacht met the challenge by delicately arranging strings and piano on some tracks, consequently adding a few sepia tones to the already fragile body of Rosalyn. The London-based producer Kenny Jones, a regular in the darkness, is in charge of mixing. « Working with him was on my dreamlist for quite a while, admits the 39-year-old musician, because he actually supervised a significant amount of records that left a durable mark on me, such as Robin Proper-Sheppard’s creations. » Let’s mention three of his most memorable albums, « Fixed Water » and « The Infinite Circle » by Sophia, and the unforgettable masterpiece « One Last Laugh in a Place of Dying » by The God Machine. No doubt that the British sound engineer lived up to his reputation: a sophisticated production for the ten songs of « All Your Silences ».

Paradoxically, it’s the electricity of « The Nineties » which, with its sticky spleen, opens the album. Long-term exorcism, tribute to the pre-Internet generation ? Does this song illustrate a personal never-ending search for an undying musical hero or should it be considered as a guideline for every teenager tortured by self-deprecation and real-life perspectives, who knows ? A songwriter like Mark Kozelek, considerably used to spiteful confessions, would probably not argue about the sometimes raw and disturbing contents of a song like « These Hands I Care For » because of the crystal clear link with his initial slowcore impulse. Nevertheless, the first Rosalyn album specifically favours the melodies (« It Will Pass », « All Your Silences »), exposing a real and natural pop sensibility, already shining through some hits by The View Electrical. Catchy like those previously mentioned, « Love Never Calls Me By My Name » even lurks into the glacial Arab Strap post-folk, far from the mystical poetry of Leonard Cohen, despite an almost indecent wink at one of the greatest ballads of the late master. But ultimately, among all these songs of love and hate, « A Devoted Man » is the one which minutiously describes, with the most peculiar details, the abyssal and expanding gap between the two partners who stay unable to express their own expectations ; all it takes to erode away the cement of every relationship, as soon as one of us locks himself/herself into a deadly silence. « Obviously, music is definitely the best option to push away this lack of communication that was unfortunately inflicted on me more than once, even if I’m the one who’s always been used to express emotions, recognizes Frédéric Aellen. As a matter of fact, I hate these silences so much, because they always throw us into a massive solitude, right when we’re supposed to rejoice in the presence of our loved one. »

It is little wonder « Rise » was chosen to end this glowing record: almost like a prophecy, this song is a middle finger raised to the lost years as a powerful self-affirmation. Is it the actual sound of Rosalyn refusing to sleep with the enemy ? Time will tell where the true healing is… But for now, let’s listen to the whispers of a big-hearted rocker who’s been fiercely covering every single page of his sonic diary with this burning promise (« I won’t bleed til I’m dry, no, not this time »), until the long-awaited day of resilience.
